Time: 7:00 p.m.

Cost: Free

Website: www.buttonwoods.org

Venue: Buttonwoods Museum

The community is invited to a free lecture, “Baseball in Haverhill in the 19th Century,” at the Buttonwoods Museum, 240 Water St., Haverhill, Mass., at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, April 3.

Baseball, two words in the 19th century, has been played in the United States since before the Civil War. Haverhill proudly fielded multiple teams during the 19th century. Baseball historian Brian Sheehy will trace the development of baseball in the 19th century through the lens of Haverhill’s teams.

“Baseball in Haverhill in the 19th Century” is presented in conjunction with the William H. Moody Exhibit, a permanent exhibition commemorating the life and legacy of the Hon. William H. Moody and honoring the 2017 centennial of his death. William Henry Moody (1853–1917) was born in Newbury and grew up in Danvers and Salem before settling in Haverhill as a lawyer. He went on to serve locally, including as District Attorney for the Eastern District of Massachusetts, and in all three branches of the federal government. Moody also played baseball at Phillips Academy in Andover and at Harvard University before serving as the first president of the Eastern New England League and, in 1903, attending the first-ever World Series game.

The exhibit commemorates the life and legacy of the Hon. William H. Moody during 2017, the centennial of his July 2nd death. William Henry Moody (1853–1917), a friend of both Theodore Roosevelt and William Taft, made his name as a prosecutor in the Lizzie Borden trial before serving as a congressman, secretary of the Navy, attorney general, and Supreme Court justice. Throughout his career, Moody represented the people of Essex County and the ideals of the Progressive Era.
